The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees – UNHCR has declined land for establishing another settlement for South Sudan refugees in Northern Uganda.
The UN agency says there is no immediate need to establish a settlement following a decline on the influx of South Sudan refugees to the region.
Authorities in Agago district had offered 40 Square kilometres of land in Paimol Sub County for establishment of a settlement to decongest some of the existing settlements in the region.
However, Duniya Aslam Khan, the spokesperson of UNHCR in Uganda, says it is too costly to establish a new refugee resettlement at a time the agency is cash strapped.
She says they require a minimum of $3million to operationalize a new refugee settlement.
According to Aslam, any land earmarked for hosting refugees should undergo technical assessment, verification and survey by office of UNHCR and the office of the prime minister.
