There is no better way to celebrate Uganda’s 55th Independence Day than launching a new home-grown radio station.
Magic 1 HD, the latest station to jump the competitive local television industry, has officially started its operation after months of extensive preparation. It was over the weekend launched to staff and invited Kampala journalists by Uganda Broadcasting Corporation Managing Director Mr. Winston David Agaba.
Headed by Chief Executive Officer-cum-Station Manager Junior Dave Kazoora or JK, the station has set its eyes on making a splash in the local music industry with fresh offerings.
The radio and TV stations recently went through a series of changes to both its line-up and its playlist so ordered custom themes to signify the change and spent $4 million on revamping the studios.
Magic now is featuring well-known voices from Kampala like Juliana Muhaye and Hakeem Saga a.k.a Hakeem the Dream formerly at RadioCity, Sheila Saltoft a former presenter at Urban Television, Captain DMS who left HOT100 sometime back and city comedian Musiimenta Ronnie McVex.
“We have re-launched Magic 100FM and rebranded U Magic to Magic 1 HD to enable us reach and relate with our audience,” Mr. Winston David Agaba said during the station’s soft launch at UBC Nile Avenue in Kampala.
Mr. Agaba said Magic 100 and Magic 1 HD target young listeners as its main focus group through a combination of music and entertainment as its core strength, apart from programmes that cater to local taste and culture.
“The stations will provide a healthy competition to other radio stations in Uganda.”
He added that the response has been overwhelming after Magic’s reintroduction and broadcast test a recently, especially on social media – the station’s main platform.
“I am confident that our stations will become a new phenomenon and able to attract their own unique listeners.
“It will also function as an avenue for local talents to materialise their dreams in radio and television broadcasting field,” he said.
