Secondary schools head teachers in Buliisa district are worried about the performance of students especially in science subjects after the three government schools in the district being reported without Biology and Chemistry teachers.
According to the chairperson secondary schools’ head teachers Association Mr. Ayiba George Butele; it is revealed that the only Biology teacher in the district who had been posted at Butiaba Seed School in Butiaba Sub-county fled his work station last year over alleged witchcraft threats from the students.
He is now reported into Boda- Boda business in his home town of Nebbi. Mr. Butele further revealed that over 2000 students in both A and O’level from the three government schools and six private secondary schools in the district are being taught by senior six leavers.
In other Subjects like English and mathematics, the district is also battling inadequate professional teachers with only two in the whole district. The two teachers are in schools of Bugungu SS in Kigwera Sub-county and Biiso War Memorial SS in Biiso sub-county respectively.
The seal of teachers in the three government school is still wanting; Biiso War Memorial SS which is supposed to be with a seal of 32 teachers has only 12 teachers; Bugungu Secondary School with a seal of 25 teachers has only 7 teachers and Butiaba seed which is supposed to have a seal of also 25 teachers has only 7 teachers as well.
The district Education Officer Mr. Byenkya Christopher confirmed the allegations and encouraged the few teachers to continue teaching despite being overwhelmed with loads of work. He pledged to engage the ministry of Education about the matter.
