Baingana Fred took a risk and it paid off, most of it in ways he probably did not anticipate, but greatly appreciates. It was while a senior five student pursuing a science combination, when Baingana was first introduced to country music locally known as kandogokamu, and as a young with a zeal for singing in the school choir, joining a small band seemed like a chance he should take.

So he took it.

“I thought, ‘This might be fun,’” said Baingana, who is now earning well and making investments through tour performances in different towns of central Uganda.

Baingana could be Shs100 million richer by December 16th at Kololo Independence Grounds if his song composed to help market Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) themes and campaigns is announced as the winner at OWC Kadongokamu music competition grand finale.

He was among the 25 musicians unveiled to the media on Tuesday by Lt. Gen. Charles Angina, Deputy Chairman OWC.

“There would be no better joy than to be rewarded with Shs100 million for doing what I love,” he told TheUgandan.

Lt. Gen, Angina assured youths who lack jobs in the country to emulate Baingana and his compatriots, saying “Your suffering is soon ending”

The 25 finalists also include seasoned local kadongokamu musicians like Fred Ssebbaale, Salongo Dan Mugula, Vicent Segawa, Birungi Scovia, Willy Mukabya, Mathias Walukaga, Alice Nassimbrwa among others working with the Uganda Music Promoters and Venue Owners Association.

The participating artists are mobilizing fellow Ugandans especially the 68% of the population outside the money economy to engage in sustainable commercial agriculture production in order to eradicate poverty

The Chief coordinator of OWC, Gen Salim Saleh Akandwanaho officiated over the preliminaries that took place on 18th Oct 2017 at Kapeeka Grounds Nakaseke District where about 70 artists performed a range of ensembles that they had pieced together in front of the crowd and special guests in attendance.
