Heart straining sorrow from local musician Angella Katatumba who on Thursday morning lost her father, Bonney Katatumba, who succumbed to colon cancer.
“I love and miss you soooo much Papa. I know you are in heaven with your beloved parents, brothers, and friends having a wonderful reunion and watching over us,” Angella said.
“It was a surprise to us because we were not aware of [him having] colon cancer. My father had prostate cancer but it was managed and we thought he was safe. Now I have learned that one needs to check for several other cancers,” she continued.
Those were some of the words Ms. Angella Katatumba said about her now deceased father Bonney, a prominent businessman and Pakistan Consul in Uganda.
Mr. Katatumba had tested positive for prostate cancer 16 years ago but it was managed since it was detected early until yesterday when the family was shocked to learn that their father, who died at about 8.00am local time, had colon cancer, also known as Colorectal cancer.
Angella’s twin brother Rugiirwa Katatumba said, “We are so saddened to have lost you yesterday. You put up a real fight. I remember you always telling us that you would never want to live on those lifesaving machines…. We love you so much and we know you loved us all too.”
Married with two wives, Gertrude and Grace, the father of nine was born on April 3, 1946, in Mbarara.
He attended Nyamitanga Catholic Parish Primary School, before proceeding to Ibanda Junior School, where he was enrolled on a Shell BP scholarship. From Ibanda Junior, he moved to Ntare School, Mbarara and later to Old Kampala High School, where he completed his secondary education. In 1969, he joined Makerere University, where he later graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Economics in 1971.
He held a number of honorary awards from various institutions in the US and Europe and has served as president of Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industries, a member of Economic Policy Research Centre and chairman of United Nations G77 Chamber of Commerce and Industry Developing Countries, among others.
