Doctors have warned that Ugandan women’s reproductive health is in danger, with the government warning about circulation of counterfeit Postinor two drugs, commonly known as P2, which is the most used contraceptive pill in the country
Postinor-2, an emergency contraceptive has been illegally on sale for weeks.
The counterfeit drug currently circulating on the market was imported by Kampala Road based Healthcare Pharmacy LTD.
National Drug Authority’s Ms Donna Kusemererwa warned that “Any drug outlet found in possession of the counterfeit Postinor 2 is liable to prosecution”.
“1. Batch No. T62788D Manufacturing date: 02/2016 Expiry date 02/2021, 2. Batch No T5934T Manufacturing date 09/2015 Expiry date 09/2020,” NDA said on Tuesday.
“Please note that there are genuine versions of Postinor 2 on the market bearing the same batch numbers, manufacturing and expiry dates which were legally imported by Healthcare Pharmacy.”
When used within 72 hours of unprotected sex, it helps reduce the chances of being pregnant. Many young ladies make it arbitrary to use Postinor-2 anytime they feel like; making it an everyday pill.
Ladies often use Postinor-2 wrongly; using more than a tablet at once, combining the pills with other drugs, and consuming more than twelve pills in a month. Prolonged use of this emergency contraceptive could cause a woman’s monthly period to seize indefinitely or become irregular. The chance of becoming pregnant with an irregular or non-flowing period is slim or close to zero. It also could cause a shift in the ovulation cycle, destroy the womb and cause infertility at the long run.
