It is expected thousands of Kampalans are going to be tangled in altercations with traffic police officers during netted in the drunk driving operations commonly known as Kawunyemu, which means “smell it.”
As Police are cleaning out their image by fighting corruption in the traffic department by arresting those who give bribes to traffic police officers and officers who receive bribes, count giving the cops kintu kidogo out
Below we bring you tips on how to avoid being arrested during tonight’s sweeps.
Kawunyemu App
Ugandans are sharp and by the virtue that our country’s police force has a reputation for corruption, how comfortable would you feel as a motorist about spot checks for drink-driving? One software developer came up with his own solution and designed a smartphone app with which motorists can warn fellow drivers of the location of police drink-drive checkpoints.
His invention has been welcomed by the many people who are using it.
The police have also launched a campaign to specifically discourage people from downloading the app.
When a reporter asked a few drivers whether they would use the app to avoid a police drink-drive checkpoint. Some said they would install the app to avoid corrupt policemen who were always soliciting for bribes. Others believe the app will cause more accidents.
Mind you it requires Android 4.0 and up to be downloaded.
Take an Uber
Since its launch in Uganda mid this year, global online taxi firm, Uber, a technology company that connects riders and drivers at the touch of a button has been hailed as a Godsent by most lovers of the bitter. So tonight if you do not want to spend the remaining hours of 2016 and enter the new year in some filthy Police cell, download the Uber app or ask a friend to order one for you. (Uber has “competition” in Uganda from Friendship Taxi)

Hire a moslem driver
Remember that Moslem friend who called you for Idi day food? This is the time when you have to call those true moslem friends of yours whom you have hidden from because they don’t drink when you go out with them. Dail that friend and promise him as much food and red bull all night so that he can chauffeur you around the crowded places of Kampala.
However, do not choose your designated moslem driver just basing from his or her name because some ‘Aisha’s’ have let haram overtake their faith.

Today is that one night you buy a lot of alcohol at the cheap recommended retail price and drink from your residence.
