World Cup enemies Uganda, Togo renew rivalry

Togo and Uganda clash again about 350 days after contesting the World Cup qualifier, albeit with less at stake when the sides meet for a friendly in Lome, Togo.

It may seem incongruous to celebrate playing in the 2018 World Cup African qualifying groups with the defeated side playing host, but October 4th’s game was organised in preparation for the match against Togo’s eternal rivals Ghana three days later, in Tamale.

Uganda Cranes last November enhanced chances of playing at the 2018 World Cup after walloping Togo 3 – 0 in a qualifier match played at Kampala’s Nelson Mandela National stadium. Coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic’s troops had shocked the West Africans 1 – 0 in the first leg played in Lome.

Now, local football governing body, Fufa has confirmed that the Uganda Cranes will hold a high profile training camp in Lome.

Uganda is in the same group with Egypt, Ghana and Congo Brazzaville for the final qualifies from which five group winners will automatically advance to Moscow.

Uganda players will fly out to Ghana the following day ahead of the crunch tie.

“All Uganda Cranes players summoned to the team will fly direct to Lome for the important training camp” said Fufa Communications Manager Ahmed Hussein.

Micho will announce the squad on 21st September, during the weekly press conference.
