Outgoing Saudi Arabian ambassador, Dr. Jamal bin Abdulaziz Raffa, has been informed by President Yoweri Museveni that the government will support an investor to build a tea factory in Luwero District, State House said on Saturday.

Part of the juicy deal involves State House signing off to the entrepreneur hectares of land for the tea processing factory at a yet to be disclosed location, just over 61kms outside the capital Kampala. Uganda, Africa’s third-biggest tea producer has more than 31,000 hectares under tea growing.

In response, Amb. Raffa flanked by his deputy Rakan Alberykyt and Consul Bander Alfaifi accepted Museveni’s proposal before saying that he is interested in establishing factories in Uganda for pineapple and coffee processing because the country is rich but not well utilised.

Luwero is a hotspot for land disputes. Last month, a list of influential people inclusing Grieves Byakika Wakutala, an assistant accountant in parliament were accused of fraudulently acquiring land from over 20 family members of Luyimbazi estates among many other cases.

In 2013, Museveni started a poverty eradication drive in Luwero district, vowing to make Luwero Triangle, one of the poorest areas in Uganda into a zone where the rest of the country can learn modern commercial agriculture from.
