Residents of Bandwe village in Nsangi division, Wakiso district have vowed to maintain their resistance against any further works on the ongoing construction of the Kampala-Entebbe Express Highway if they are not fully compensated by UNRA.
They stormed UNRA officials and Chinese contractors who were inspecting the ongoing multibillion road project and demanded immediate explanation as to why their land was being used without compensation.
“Our houses are being dismantled by Chinese heavy machines, we have never been given even a 50 shillings’ coin,” lamented the rowdy crowd.
They added, “we shall not allow any further construction until we get our money and this should be as soon as possible because some of us don’t have even where to live.”
The situation got tense as the residents gathered in bigger numbers starting to riot and attempting to burn all the vehicles of the visiting officials plus putting an end to their lives until police from Kajjansi was deployed.
The angry residents were dispersed by police shouting bullets in the air and vowing to arrest anyone causing chaos.
UNRA has not yet confirmed when it will fully settle the compensation of the angry residents though they maintain that road works will continue despite challenges of this kind.
