Jorge Miguel Da Costa’s Vipers SC hope to add to Kampala Capital City Authority’s recent woes in Tuesday’s crunch Azam Uganda Premier League title decider to end Mike Mutebi’s bid for the domestic double.
KCCA have won one game out of the past five and return to action this Tuesday against Vipers at Phillip Omondi Stadium with one main mission – to stretch the gap at the helm of the league.
They were runaway leaders in the Ugandan league and had been hoping for a place in the CAF Champions League’s group stages before Mamelodi Sundowns thwarted their ambitions and were leapfrogged by SC Villa.
In compensation, the Kasasiro Boys edged Al Masry of Egypt in a preliminary to progress to the group stages of the CAF Confederations Cup – a task that Da Costa’s Vipers fell short on.
Now the two rivals lock horns in the middle of a congested fixture and victory for KCCA against Vipers will see the defending champions stretch the gap at the top to three points ahead of second-placed SC Villa, who have 48 points.
“Now we want to spoil KCCA’s season a little bit more,” quipped Da Costa ahead of today’s game.
“We are good to go, the squad is competitive and in good shape. All players are fine and ready to give their all,” the Vipers tactician added while speaking to his club’s website.
“We are not going to Philip Omondi to defend, we want to be the first side this season to inflict a home defeat on KCCA FC in the league,” he warned.
However, KCCA boss Mutebi is confident that the team is in right conditions and ready to take up the challenge despite a congested fixture.
“It is a big game for either side but of course more important to us because we are still engulfed in the title race. Both teams have good players and I believe they will offer an entertaining game,” Mutebi told the KCCA website.
“Our target at the moment is to stretch the lead at the top and thus we do not take any game lightly. The fact that we have games in hand doesn’t mean that we losen up but instead we should take a game at a time,’ he added.
KCCA’s top-scorer Geoffrey Sserukuma scored over the weekend in a 1-1 draw against Masaka-based SC Villa, but Vipers have Tony Odur back and the forward scored a brace in their last league game against Soana FC at the St Mary’s stadium.
Vipers won the first leg at Nakivubo Stadium 2-1.
