Uganda Cup winners Vipers failed to utilise home advantage when they took on Volcan Club de Moroni of Comoros in their opening Caf Confederation Cup preliminary round match on Saturday at Namboole Stadium.
The patchy game ended in a 0-0 draw despite Vipers boost an attacking lineup with Erisa Ssekisambu and Tony Odur that was expected to trouble Moroni’s defense throughout the 90 minutes.
Vipers assistant coach Edward Golola said he was disappointed that they had failed to score in Kampala and insisted it is a must for them to do so in Comoros if they are to go further in this continental competition as they seek recognition beyond the country’s borders.
Golola said on Sunday, “We created a lot of chances but unfortunately could not score but we promise Ugandans that we shall make them proud in the return game and advance to the next level.”
“We were under a lot of pressure to score and sometimes resorted to the long ball but I am sure we still can still get a favorable result away from home,” captain Nicholas Wadada stated after the game.
The winner of the second tie will face the winner between South Africa’s Platinum Stars and Uniao Desportiva do Songo.
