The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has this year embarked on transforming the Health and Education sectors during their week-long Tarehe Sita (Six days).
Brig George Johnson Etyang who is the overall supervisor of this year’s Tarehe Sita told journalists on Tuesday that their main target this year is to create a lasting positive vhange in education and health across the country with their main focal point of focuss being Lira where the main activities are being held.
“For this entire week, we want to bridge the performance gaps in mainly the field of education and health which justifies the action at Awiirao Primary School and Barapwo Health Centre III” Brig Etyang said.
The UPDF has very often stated that it’s a people’s army, a statement re-echoed by Brig Etyang who says that despite the budget constraints face by the force, they still share the successes and difficulties with the civilian community.
This medical team in Lira District will offer free dental and eye care services, carry out diabetes and pressure checks, offer free HIV/AIDS counselling and testing, provide free treatment of malaria and typhoid, among others.
Some of the major activities to be carried out include; rehabilitation of the placenta pit and the Out – Patient Department at Barapwo Health Centre III, in Lira Sub County by the UPDF medical team. Barapwo’s Placenta Pit was initially poorly designed due to poor workmanship which will be redesigned by the UPDF to make it round and water-tight.
Residents in the area have overwhelmingly welcomed the move by the gallant forces to help them in improving their health systems and vowed to cooperate and render them a warm reception.
