The primary reception Centre for Congolese refugees from Ituri in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo is undergoing disinfection.
The officer-in-charge of the centre, Ahab Tumushabe, from Action Africa Help (AAH) says the disinfection exercise is in response to an outbreak of Ebola, in western DRC.
The Sebagoro Reception Centre, in Sebagoro landing site in Kaiso Sub County, is the first point of call for the refugees before being transferred to Kyangwali refugee settlement, over 100 kilometers. At the centre, the refugees are temporarily registered and screened for various medical conditions.
Tumushabe says the disinfection exercise is also to help control the possibility of other diseases in the centre.
The reception centre has a workspace for humanitarian workers, a drugstore and tents for the humanitarians. It also has temporary shelters, with makeshift latrines and water tanks for the refugees, as they await transfer to Kyangwali.
Despite the messy sanitation at the shelters and Sebagoro landing site generally, there has not been an outbreak of common diseases like cholera and dysentery.
Meanwhile, at Kyangwali refugee settlement deaths of refugees are a common and frequent occurrence. A number of cemeteries have been created with diggers stationed permanently.
