President Yoweri Museveni has told Ugandan citizens that his government has been challenged by the financial “haemorrhage” (donation) to other countries.
In his new year’s message, he tells the country his government will reduce on the financial “haemorrhage” (donation) to other airlines by Ugandans and those travelling to Uganda.
But Museveni adds that that its pace of industrialization will pick up going forward as Uganda has been at peace for the first time in 500 years, for many years now.
Uganda is determined to have its national carrier flying again in 2017. Government officials have set August as the month Uganda Airlines will flap its wings again after more than 16 years of being rendered inoperable and in some kind of “abeyance” Negotiations with Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier and France’s Airbus for lease of planes to make the initial fleet are in advanced stages.
Regional carriers, particularly Kenya Airways which has for the past 15 years operated Entebbe like a domestic hub, are likely to suffer loss of revenue as Uganda seeks to claw back regional routes to kick-start an ambitious global outreach.
