President Museveni has long been a critic of the Netherlands court.
Uganda is not yet sure if it will leave the International Criminal Court (ICC).
This was revealed by Deputy Foreign Minister Oryem Okello when asked about what the country’s position is on the ICC following South Africa’s announcement that it is pulling out.
Mr Okello told AP that the issue should be discussed by the African Union as a whole and it’s likely to be a “hot issue” at the next AU summit.
President Museveni has in recent years been one of the ICC’s most vocal critics, but referred some Lord’s Resistance Army cases to the Netherlands court when it was first established.
Mr Museveni said that the ICC was a “tool to target” Africa by Western leaders. Museveni pledged to bring a proposal to leave the institution. “Then they can be left alone with their court,” he said in December 2014. The mass withdrawal of African countries would leave the ICC diminished—34 of the countries party to the Rome Statute are African, the largest continental bloc out of a total of 124 states.
