There are only about 880 mountain gorillas left
The jubilation by Ugandans on social media about reports that high up in the mountains of Mgahinga National Park, Kisoro District, trackers on Monday encountered an extremely rare sight. A female gorilla, was holding to newborns—twins have been trashed by Uganda Wildlife Authority.
“CONGS NALONGO: Jubilation in #MgahingaGorilla National Park #Uganda A resident mountain gorilla gives birth to twins” the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation had announced on twitter at 9.40 East African time before getting numerous retweets across different medium.
Speaking to TheUgandan in an exclusive interview, UWA’s Public Relations Officer, Simplicious Gessa said: ‘The information circulating on social media about a Mgahinga NP resident gorilla giving birth to twins is not true. That picture is most probably from Dr Congo’s Virunga NP and is months old.’
For the last two years, Mgahinga has hosted the eight-member ‘Nyakagezi’ mountain gorilla family, which consists of five males (silverbacks), two females and a two-year-old baby named Mutagamba after former Tourism Minister Maria Mutagamba.
Meanwhile, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (BINP) had a birth of a new baby gorilla on 21st August 2016 with baby gorilla was discovered in Bushaho area a day after it born to Bunyindo.
The birth of the new born brought the number of gorilla individuals in the group to nine (09) and the composition of the group is: 1 silver back, 1 black back, 4 adult females, 1 juvenile and 2 infants.
There are only about 880 mountain gorillas left among the known groups in Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo area known as Virunga Ranges.
