Gen Mugisha Muntu, the president of the biggest opposition party in Uganda is set to be replaced.
Opposition Forum for Democratic Change has set November 2 when the new president will take over the reins.
The party Deputy Secretary General Harold Kaija told journalists at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi that the current party president’s term of office will expire on 22 November.
Kaija encouraged all willing and eligible party members express interest and prepare to pick forms in July this year.
“Those interested in the office of party president should be informed that registration and picking of nomination forms will be between July and August,” Kaija said.
He revealed that open campaigns will then start shortly after those activities.
“Those interested in leading our party should start preparing because we need good ideas to push our party into power,” Kaija added.
Past FDC presidents
The party has only been led by only two individuals; Dr Kizza Besigye who is the founding president and perennial presidential candidate and Gen Mugisha Muntu. Some party members have complained that the party has only had leaders from western Ugandan, arguing that in case the party won the presidency, there would be “no change” since President Museveni comes from the same region.
Those who have previous shown interest in party top post include Nathan Nandala Mafabi who is currently the secretary general of the party and Geoffrey Ekanya, a former legislator, currently the treasurer of the party.
Although Gen Muntu still has a chance to have a go at the party position, he is likely to face competition from senior party leaders such as Alice Alaso, Reagan Okumu among others. We will follow this to the end and keep you informed.
