Muslim faithful have dragged government to court over the recent raid of Nakasero Mosque by joint security agencies.
According to the three petitioners, the government security agencies made off with a number of valuables including cameras, computers, mobile phones, and unspecified, amounts of money. The security agencies are also reported to have taken compact disks containing Islamic teachings.
The three applicants who sued the Attorney General (AG), the chief government legal advisor, include Siraje Nsambu Kifampa, Habib Buwembo and Musa Musuda Yusuf.
According to a lawsuit filed on Monday before the High Court in Kampala, it was illegal for the Police to break into the mosque without a search warrant.
In the wee hours of December 27 last year, a combined team of Police and officers from the Joint Anti-Terrorism Task Force raided Nakasero Mosque on Plot 4 Snay bin Amin Street in Kampala.

Mr Habib Buwembo, one of the spokespersons at Nakasero later told the media that the officers broke into the mosque offices and “picked up computers and vital documents”.
He added that in the Nakasero raid, police had arrested 18 people and 7 of them have been released without being charged. They had been arrested in connection with Sheikh Muhammad Kiggundu’s murder.
Buwembo further said that six motorcycles and Shs50 million meant for the ongoing construction of Ummah house also disappeared after the raid.
Through their lawyers of Centre for Legal Aid, the concerned Muslims want court to direct the government to unconditionally return all items that were taken from the mosque.
They also want compensation for damages following the security agencies’ raid.
They also want court to issue an order stopping the security operatives from carrying out similar raids again.
Police acting on false intelligence
Meanwhile, Police have admitted that they acted on false intelligence when they raided Abubaker Swidiq Mosque in Kiwatule, a Kampala suburb where at least 12 people, including eight Asians were arrested and interrogated for long hours.
Police, again without a search warrant and acting on false leads raided the mosque Kiwatule mosque exactly two days after the raided Nakasero Mosque.
