The Court of Appeal will today delivered the long-awaited judgement on the election appeal by Busiro South MP Peter Ssematimba, confirming he was validly elected in 2016.

Ssematimba had appealed the High Court judgment which nullified his election on grounds that he lacked the requisite academic qualifications to be a Member of Parliament and a panel of three judges led by outgoing deputy Chief Justice Steven Kavuma overturned Justice Lydia Mugambe’s earlier ruling that Ssematimba’s certificate of A-Level equivalence which he used for his nomination for MP was invalid because the National Council of Higher Education did not verify the authenticity of his diploma in Electronic and Computer Technology before giving approving his academic qualifications.

After today’s ruling in Kampala, Sematimba’s rival Stephen Sekigozi insisted that, “In Uganda’s court, everything is possible. We expected to win this case but someone without academic documents has won.”

“Today, I feel pity for all Ugandans taking their children to school when someone can go to Nasser and forge documents
