The Health Monitoring Unit has recovered stolen medicine worth more than Shs15 billion, since the unit was created by President Museveni eight years ago.
The head of the Health Monitoring Unit, Dr Jackson Ojera, says the Unit deserves applause, rather than condemnations from health workers.
His response comes as Uganda Medical Association demand disbandment of the unit.
He says the unit is not only concerned about arrest and prosecution of health workers, but also other initiatives, such as training of health unit management committees, helping health workers access to the government payroll, and monitoring construction of hospital and regional medical stores among other activities.
President Museveni established the Health Monitoring Unit in 2009 as a strategic response to challenges in the health sector such as poor service delivery.
The Unit is a department under State House. Dr Ojera says disbanding the unit as demanded by Uganda Medical Association is not feasible.
The unit has registered over 600 arrests.
Of these cases, about 250 health workers have been prosecuted, securing over 100 convictions.
Dr Ojera says hundreds of cases are still pending in courts of law.
