Signing of EALA Gender bill long overdue – Kawamara
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Women under the Eastern African Sub-Regional Support Initiative for the Advancement of Women- EASSI have called upon heads of state in the East African Community to assent to the Gender Equality, Equity and Development bill to protect women from trafficking.

EASSI is a civil organization that monitors commitments of regional governments towards gender equality.

Sheila Kawamara Mishambi, the Executive Director EASSI, says the leaders need to assent to the bill so that the community can have a unified position on handling women trafficking.

According to Kawamara, the signing of the bill is long overdue since the East African Legislative Assembly debated and enacted it.

The bill was enacted by EALA in March 2017. It was then sent to Attorney Generals of the respective member states for perusal.
