Makerere University research fellow, Dr Stella Nyanzi who was in jail for 33 days has today been granted bail by the Buganda Road Court.

Chief Magistrate  Ereemye Mawanda granted #StellaNyanzi a Shs10 million and her 5 sureties will execute a non-cash bond of 5 million each non-cash bail after she arrived at court at about 10:45, nearly two hours late for court, supported by two prison warders.

The magistrate reminded media of the sub judice rule.

Dr Nyanzi is facing two charges of cyber related crimes slapped against her about a month ago by the State for allegedly referring to the person of President Museveni as a “pair of buttocks”. The State says that Dr Nyanzi’s reference to the person of the President was offensive.

On Monday, her lawyers petitioned the Constitutional Court challenging the legality of the Mental Treatment Act.

Prosecution’s recommendation for Dr Nyanzi’s mental examination based on her alleged past facetious behavior.

Next hearing to consider the mental health element of Dr. Nyanzi’s case is on May 25, 2017.
