Shs6 BILLION OIL CASH: Uganda Law Society denounces Justice Kavuma

Lawyers under their umbrella association, Uganda Law Society (ULS), have Wednesday afternoon denounced Deputy Chief Justice Steven Kavuma’s order, stopping Parliament or any individual from inquiring into the Shs6b oil cash bonanza.

In a strong worded letter, president of the Uganda Law Society (ULS) Francis Gimara slammed Mr Kavuma for sparking controversy and putting their fraternity in bad light.

Subsequently, the lawyers have applied to be joined as an interested party to the Constitution Appeal No.07 of 2017 from which the impugned order arises.

Mr Gimara also clarified that the Constitution gives all Ugandans permission to question the legal basis of the payments codenamed ‘the presidential golden handshake’, a reward to 42 top government officials.

“Kavuma’s injunction against Parliament is stopping them from exercising their constitutional mandate to provide oversight on the spending of public resources. This effect fetters that right of citizens to participate in the affairs of government as guaranteed by Article 38 of the Constitution of Uganda,” Mr Gimara said.
