As the death toll of Muslim clerics continues to rise, Muslim clerics have vowed to return the police officers given to them by Inspector General of police Gen Kale Kayihura arguing that there is no security they are providing to them.
Sheikh Nuhu Muzaata the spokesperson of the Kibuli Muslim faction says having police officers as body guards seems useless as the ones they are protecting are continuously being killed. He wondered why no final report about the shootings has been released despite investigations into the matter
“I think its high time we returned these police officers. If a whole Major is shot dead with all the guns in his possession and a UPDF bodyguard, then what about us who have these mere police officers as bodyguards?” asked Muzata.
Muzata was speaking during prayers for the Late Maj Muhammad Kigundu who was shot dead together with his bodyguard Sgt Stephen Mukasa by unknown assailants on Saturday at about 7am at Masanafu Trading Centre, a Kampala suburb.
Maj Kigundu becomes the thirteenth Muslim cleric to be murdered. Others include; Hassan Ibrahim Kirya(Bweyogerere), Abdul Kadir Muwaya(Mayuge), Mustafa Baiga(Bwebajja), Yunusu Sentamu(William Street), Abubaker Kiwewa(Kyanja), Yunus Mudungu, Muhammad Maganda, Abdu Jawali Sentunga, Abdul Rashid Wafula among others.
Police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi who represented Gen Kale Kayihura during the prayers found a hard time as all speakers blamed police for the laxity in security that has led to the murder of Muslim clerics.
In his message to the mourners, Kaweesi said Police is doing all it takes to end the killings and investigations are being undertaken to net the assailants.
Gen Edward Katumba Wamala the Chief of Defence Forces eulogized the late Maj Kigundu as a hardworking and very well disciplined solidier. He called upon Muslims to remain calm and peaceful as investigations go on.
It is alleged that Maj Kigundu was shot dead by members of the Allied Defence Forces(ADF) according to Felix Kaweesi the police spokes person.
