Just months after withdrawing from their two-year sojourn in neigbouring South Sudan, Uganda has deployed in Equatorial Guinea.

The Uganda Peoples Defence Forces’ latest deployment was confirmed as “another show of confidence in UPDF professionalism” by army spokesperson Brig. Richard Karemire on Tuesday.

The size of Uganda’s contingent in the West African nation was not readily known by press time.

“A UPDF training team is now deployed in Equatorial Guinea under Lt. Col. W. Keita. An agreement was duly signed,” a short statement from the Uganda Media Centre also said.

The team dubbed Uganda Military Training and Mentoring Team (UMTMT) is deployed under section 40 of the UPDF Act and replaces Zimbabwe’s contingent which left Equatorial Guinea after a few months on the same mission.

UPDF also has a big presence in Somalia and in the Central African Republic.
