The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has Thursday release the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) 2018 results eleased at President’s Office, Kampala.
UNEB executive secretary, Mr Dan Odongo revealed that at least 91 candidate who sat 2018 Uganda advanced certificate of education (UACE) exams will not receive their results with their colleagues after the examination body said they had withheld them as they investigate issues of malpractices.
In the senior six exams, the most common forms of examination breaches have been external assistance, substitution of scripts, smuggling of unauthorized material into examination room and impersonation. Principal mathematics biology and chemistry were mainly affected subjects.
Female candidates outperformed their male counterparts at all levels in the 2018 UACE exams. The failure rate among female candidates is also lower at 0.8% than for the males at 1.8%.
History, economics entrepreneurship education, mathematics, physics chemistry and art have been performed better and literature in English and biology performed poorly. According to Odongo the situation in biology is worrying as the decline in performance has been observed in the last three years.
At the minimum 2p level required for university admission 63,123 candidates qualify. In case where 1p and two subsidiary passes levels are considered for admission to other tertiary institutions a total of 83,536 candidates will qualify for admission compared to 83301 in 2017.
Relatedly, State minister for higher education JC Muyingo has revealed that government is to recruit more 3800 secondary teachers this financial year.
According to Muyingo 1900 out of 3800 will be science teachers to address the Challenge of poor performance in science subjects in the country.
He also noted that they more science laboratories are to be constructed in several secondary schools to facilitate science practicals.
