Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda met with Commonwealth Secretary General Patricia Scotland at his office in Kampala.
The British Baroness arrived in the country yesterday evening ahead of the Commonwealth Youth Ministers Meeting that will be held at Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort from 31st July to 4t Aug. 2017.
The Deputy Minister said discussions had centred on a Commonwealth wide interoperable framework that was ‘important to exchange knowledge and find solutions as we move forward with the contours of the Youth Ministers meeting.’
“We have had a fruitful exchange on a number of views plus issues that are mutually beneficial for both our relations,’ Dr. Rugunda told TheUgandan.
They discussed a wide range of issues, including the high incidence of unemployment among the youth; climate change; the empowerment of women; delays in the administration of justice; and the fight against corruption.
“The Government of Uganda is happy to host the Commonwealth Youth Ministers Meeting and we thank the Secretary General for the good work she is doing,” Rugunda added.
They also exchanged views on areas in which the 53 member states can work in partnership, pool their knowledge and share their expertise, for the benefit of the Commonwealth and its members. They both expressed the desire to see a more active Commonwealth.
“We are delighted to be back after the 2007 Summit and it has been a pleasure not only to come to Uganda but also share views with the Prime Minister about how we put the wealth into the common man,” Ms. Scotland said.
“Uganda has the youngest people among our (Commonwealth) 53 member states so listening to them at next week’s Ministers’ meeting in Munyonyo is an incredibly good thing for us to do.”
“We are not be just talking about these benefits that the youth ought to enjoy but work to delivering them together and I am very proud to have the support of Uganda.”
