Kampala, Wednesday July 11th, 2018 – Centenary Bank, Uganda’s leading commercial microfinance Bank, has today announced its Shs.155m contribution towards the 2018 Rotary Cancer Run. The announcement was made at a meeting hosted by Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, the Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda at the Parliamentary Building in Kampala.
This is the seventh time that the Bank shall be partnering with Rotary Uganda in the fight against the Cancer scourge.
This year, the run shall be held under the theme, ‘Keep Running,’ so as to foster the need to be fit and healthy. Proceeds from the run shall go towards purchase of two Linear Accelerators (modern cancer treatment machines) and building of two bunkers at Nsambya Hospital. The estimated cost for both the machines and bunkers is USD 4.5 million, approximately Shs18 billion.
Speaking at the official launch, Mrs. Beatrice Lugalambi, the General Manager Business Development and Marketing at Centenary Bank, revealed that seven years ago, the Bank joined efforts with Rotary under its under ‘Bridging the Cancer Gap’ programme to combat this killer disease and as such, the partnership has yielded the “construction of the Rotary-Centenary Bank Cancer Centre at Nsambya Hospital in Kampala and as well as the construction of the Rotary Blood Bank at Mengo Hospital.”
The speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Rebbeca Kadaga hailed the Bank for its continued support for such a cause that is greatly affecting the nation. She thanked Rotary Uganda for their commitment towards health and urged them to build other cancer treatment centres outside Kampala.
Past District Governor Stephen Mwanje and Chair of the Uganda Rotary Cancer Programme informed the Speaker that the strategic plan is to have a cancer centre in all the five major regions of the country. The ceremony was attended by District Governor Shamirah Bhatt and many other Rotary leaders. Each Member of Parliament last year contributed Shs1m towards the run.
