Wasteful Vipers SC settled for a 0-0 draw against Express FC in their Azam Uganda Premier League contest at Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku on Friday evening.
The stalemate will leave the hosts at the 8th spot with 24 points from 18 rounds of league matches.
It was the away side which looked threatening as they twice had chances to break the deadlock in the 21st minute through Brian Kakaire and Milton Kalisa who also had a chance midway through the opening half but both players squandered them to keep the score goalless after the first interval.
Despite their efforts in the opening stanza, Vipers tried to find a goal in the 70th minute as Kalisa broke free towards the box, but his attempt to dribble past Express goalkeeper Emmanuel Opio didn’t yield fruit and he was stopped in his tracks while Yayo Lutimba had the hosts’ best chance of the day but his free kick shot over keeper Ismail Watenga’s posts.
With both coaches, Matia Lule and Richard Wasswa, making changes, none of the sides created clear cut chances in the last five minutes.
The draw for Vipers, the reigning Uganda Cup kings who recently knocked out Comoros’ Volcan di Moroni in the Caf Confederation Cup preliminary round in fourth place and within seven points of leaders KCCA, who have 35.
Elsewhere, Police made it five consecutive wins in all competitions with a 2-1 victory over Soana in the Uganda Premier League scoring through a Ben Ochen’s penalty in the 28th minute and Rahmat Ssenfuka scored the winning goal on Friday at Kavumba Recreational Ground.
Abdallah Mubiru’s cops move a place above to ninth with 23 points dislodging The Saints while defeat for Soana leaves George Lutalo’s charges fifth, but only two points off Police.
In Friday’s other league game at Mehta stadium in Lugazi town, Nelson Senkatuka’s strike at the death of first half gave Proline FC a much needed victory over URA FC to move the Kampala side into 10th while URA FC remain 7th on the log.
