New shocking details have emerged as the Director of Public Prosecutions directed that the Kanyamunyu brothers who are facing murder charges over the shooting of Kenneth Akena be tried in the High Court.

Prosecution represented by Annie Ntambi, Doreen Nelima and Racheal Nabwire told grade one magistrate, Noah Sajjabi’s shocked Nakawa Courtroom that on the night of November 12, 2016, along Jinja Road, in Kampala District, Mathew Kanyamunyu while with his girlfriend Cynthia Munwangari shot and killed Akena, drove him around the city for three hours and called his brother and co-accused, Joseph Kanyamunyu to Nakasero Hospital.

An eyewitness account by a security guard (names withheld) at the hospital told state investigators that Joseph Kanyamunyu arrived at Nakasero Hospital just minutes before police came and packed his motor vehicle next to his brother, Mathew’s Toyota Prado Landcruiser, Reg: UAW 548M. He was seen by the security officer being given a pistol by the prime suspect before driving hurriedly off to an unknown destination.

According to prosecution, a search was done in Mathew Kanyamunyu’s motor vehicle but the gun was not there. From information given by the security officer, a follow up was done to recover the gun from Joseph Kanyamunyu but he was not helpful and the gun has never been recovered to date.

It was narrated how Joseph Kanyamunyu hours later showed up at Norvik Hospital, along Bombo road where the dying Akena had been transferred to after surgery as his condition required to be managed in an ICU environment and offered to pay the medical bills of the victim before he was pronounced dead due to hemorrhagic shock resulting from gunshot wounds.

The following morning after finding no evidence at his apartment, a search was conducted by Police at a house rented by Kanyamunyu’s girlfriend Cynthia Munwangari and officers recovered his shirt which was stained by blood. The shirt was sent to government analytical laboratory (GAL) and the prime suspect’s car was also subjected to forensic analysis as well.

Kanyamunyu’s trouser and the bullet were recovered from the body of the deceased and also taken to GAL for examination according to Deputy DPP Betty Khisa.

The DPP has also separately charged Joseph Kanyamunyu with a second count of being an accessory after the commission of an offence.

The Kanyamunyu’s have been sent back on remand at Luzira prison until they will appear before a judge at the next convenient session of the High court.
