Following several cases of rape in the country, President Yoweri Museveni has said that rapists deserve to be killed because they are responsible for the spread of deadly diseases such as HIV AIDS.

Just the other day TheUgandan reported a story in which a headmaster of a nursery school was arrested and detailed after police found out that he had raped four girls including one in pre-primary.

While delivering his speech, President Museveni said that rapists are killers and therefore deserve to be killed when found in the act.

“A rapist is a killer and he deserves to be killed,” the President said at the celebration to mark the 36th edition of Tarehe Sita Anniversary at Apac, Boma Grounds, Apac District, on Monday.

What the law says: Article 22 of the constitution states that “no person shall be deprived of life intentionally except in execution of a sentence passed by a court of competent jurisdiction in respect a criminal offence under the laws of Uganda”.

Last week, police in Kasangati, Wakiso District rescued a Rwandan national Habib Uwimana from a mob after he was allegedly caught attempting to rape a woman.  Angry residents accused him of raping 10 women in one month.

The BBC also aired and published on its platforms stories of a one, 13-year-old Eloise, who claims she is mothering a nine-month-old child allegedly sired by a Ugandan soldier, and another 14-year-old Mirie, also from CAR, who dreads to recall the day she was allegedly raped by a UPDF soldier. Eloise told the BBC that when she was 12, a Ugandan soldier, deployed to protect her town, Obo ironically attacked her.
