Two people were shot dead by the police in Rukungiri following violent clashes between FDC supporters and the police force.

One of the deceased has been identified as Edison Nasasira alias Kakuru, believed to be in his 30s and a resident Kafunjo cell, Eastern division in Rukungiri Municipality. He’s been working as a taxi tout at Nabugabo stage in Rukungiri Municipality.

The second person died in hospital where he had been admitted with serious injuries.

It all started when police that was being commanded by Richard Emuna, the Rukungiri District Police Commander blocked all routes heading to Rukungiri Municipal Stadium where, the area member of Parliament, Roland Mugume Kaginda was to address a rally. Kaginda was accompanied by former FDC president Dr. Kizza Besigye and other top FDC officials including Ingrid Turinawe and Patrick Oboi Amuriat. Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago was also among the politicians slated to address the rally.

Kaginda and his team wanted to hold consultations this afternoon about the proposed constitutional amendment to remove presidential age limits. However, police fired teargas and live bullets in the air to disperse supporters who arrived in many groups wearing red ribbons and singing, Togikwatako, or don’t dare touch it.

Supporters braved teargas and live bullets and started pelting stones at police officers. In the process Kakuru was shot in the head and he died on spot.

Besigye’s car was shot at and a bullet appeared to go through its rear wind screen, while that of Turinawe had the entire rear windscreen shattered.

Police was forced to retreat from the crowd as they unsuccessfully tried to disperse the supporters.

Truckloads of the military have been dispatched from Mbarara heading to Rukungiri.
