Police discard Kenneth Akena’s ‘dying declaration’

The testimony of slain Kenneth Akena Watmon reportedly made to his to his cousin brother John Paul Nyeko that he was shot by Mathew Kanyamunyu was wrong because of a disparity in the crime scenes, according to Police.

Kanyamunyu and his Burundian girlfriend Cynthia Munwangari have been in police custody since November 12 when they were arrested following the shooting of Akena.

Police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi said preliminary investigations had established that the dying declaration, which Akena had made to Mr Nyeko was wrong because the incident could have happened at a different location.

Nyeko told the Police that his cousin informed him that he had gone to withdraw money from a bank at Forest Mall and, while reversing, he accidently collided with Kanyamunyu’s car. And when he came out to seek pardon, the suspect shot him.

Kaweesi said: “After we located the exact scene of crime and talked to the guards at Game, we discovered that Nyeko’s account was inaccurate because the guards said they did not hear any gunshot.”

Akena had been taken to the hospital by Mr Kanyamunyu and Ms Munwangari.

Mr Kanyamunyu instead says he had been attacked by two “assailants” who jumped out of the car. “One of the assailants pulled off and got out a gun to shoot him and in the scuffle, the assailant shot his colleague instead.”

He further revealed that the person who shot Akena ran away and left Akena in pain, prompting Mr Kanyamunyu to play the Good Samaritan and take Akena to hospital.

Kanyamunyu’s file was this past week sent to the Nakawa Resident State Attorney for perusal and advice.

He is today Monday expected to appear at Nakawa Court in the murder case.
