Police, army put Rwenzururu King Mumbere under house arrest after Kabarole shootings

Hundreds of military and police commandoes have besieged the cultural institution of Rwenzururu in Kasese town following the military operations that started on Thursday in Rwenzori region.

The security officers majorly Uganda Peoples Defence Force commandoes pitched camp outside the royal palace of Obusinga bwa Rwenzururu since last night. Several others are deployed at the royal hill behind the palace of Charles Wesley Mumbere, the cultural head of Obusinga bwa Rwenzururu.

Uganda Police spokesperson for Rwenzori sub region Ms Lydia Tumushabe confirmed the occupation.

Eight people were on Thursday killed in an operation that was carried out by the UPDF and Police in Kamabale A, and Karangura in Kabarole District.

The killed attackers were allegedly advancing towards the government forces. Security in the area is currently on high alert, as the army and police has surrounded the area. Tensions are high as residents are afraid to leave their homes and local authorities we contacted did not want to speak.
