The Education Minister Janet Museveni has today at the office of the president released the Uganda national examination board’s 2017 primary leaving examination, saying that out of the 628,606 pupils who turned up for the exams,571,252 (90.9%) passed the exams while 57,354 failed the exams.
The Uneb secretary general Daniel Odongo says a total of 57,198 pupils passed in first division, 293,977 passed in the second division, 128,573 passed in third division while 91,504 passed in forth division.57,354 in U hence failing completely.
Results of 2,559 candidates have been withheld pending completion of investigations of exam malpractice and the worst performing districts are Kween, Bukwo, Tororo, Kayunga, Mbale, Mayuge, Kamuli, Buvuma, Budaka and Bududa.
“About three quarters of the registered children are from UPE schools and failure rate is higher in UPE schools at 11% compared to 4% in non UPE schools.”
“We have gradually been reducing the number of students who register for exams and don’t sit for them. In 2017, we registered 2.4%, the lowest ever recorded. There was significant improvement in SST and Science. There was a decline in distinction for both English and Mathematics.”
“Examiners indicated that there was improvement on the layout of how candidates have been presenting answers. The handwriting has improved.”
“Performance in 2017 is better than 2016 expect from the division one level. At Luzira Prisions; 89 candidates and 78 sat for the exams. 3 passed in division 1, 36 division 2, 18 division 3, 20 division 4 and 1 was ungraded. Performance in non UPE schools have continued to perform better.”
