Ranked 10th in the world and is the reigning PSL goalkeeper of the year, all that however will not count as Uganda and Mamelodi Sundowns shot stopper Denis Onyango vies for the prestigious Caf player of year based in Africa at Thursay’s 2016 CAF GLO Awards due in Abuja Nigeria following his exploits in 2016.
The 31-year old Mamelodi Sundowns custodian has been sensational for club and country, posting remarkable performances. Most notably helped Uganda to Afcon 2017 qualification, ending a 39-year old wait.
Photographed on Monday donating playing equipment to his former club SC Villa, Onyango also played a key role in inspiring Masandawana to the PSL crown as well as helping the side win their first ever Caf Champions League trophy after defeating Egyptian giants Zamalek 3-1 on aggregate
He has also been superb in ensuring the Cranes are vying for a slot at the Fifa 2018 World Cup in Russia as Uganda sit second in Group E with four points from two games, including a goalless draw against a star studded Ghana side in Tamale last month.
Onyango will be up against fellow Masandawana teammate — Zimbabwean Khama Billiat and TP Mazembe captain Reinford Kalaba . During the same awards, CAF is expected to also announce the African footballer of the year which is being vied for by Riyad Mahrez, Pierre Aubameyang and Saido Mane.
The Uganda Cranes are also nominated in the team of the year as well Uganda head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic who is nominated for Coach of the year. The Serbian tactician guided the Cranes to Afcon 2017 ending a 39-year old jinx and has established a spirited campaign in the Fifa 2018 World Cup qualifiers where Uganda sits second in Group E with four points behind table leaders Egypt who have six.
