Gulu High Court resident judge, Justice Vincent Okwanga, has convicted and sentenced a- 45-year-old farmer to 18 years in for defiling his step-daughter and a primary four pupil of Purongo Primary School.

The convict Santo Okello, a resident of Pawatomero East village, Purongo Sub County in Nwoya district, had appeared before the High Court judge who charged him with aggravated defilement contrary to section 129 (3) (4) (c) of the Penal Code Act.

Prosecution led by William Bayo, alleged that on June 21st, 2013 at Pawotomero village, Purongo Sub County in Nwoya district, Okello defiled his 13-year-old step-daughter.

State Attorney Bayo told court that the incident happened when the mother of the girl who is Okello’s wife was away from home.

He said, Okello took the advantage of the absence of his wife to defile the girl, thus asking for a tougher sentence saying it will serve as a warning to men who ruin young girls.

The minor told court that her step-father defiled her when her mother had gone to a nearby village, however Okello denied the allegation.

State produced witnesses to that effect who pinned Okello on the sexual crimes.

The judge in his judgment contended with the evidence produced by the prosecution, saying all the ingredients in the case have been proved beyond reasonable doubt and according convicted Okello.

Justice Okwonga in his sentence handed Okello 18-year-jail term saying instead of protecting the girl, Okello chose to sexually abuse the girl under his care.
