The decision by the ruling party, National Resistance Movement (NRM) Members of Parliament have Tuesday passed a motion to table a private members bill to amend article 102b to scrap the presidential age limit leaves the door open for President Yoweri Museveni to extend his 31-year old grip on power, party insiders say.
NRM has majority numbers in parliament.
The widely expected move was fronted by Kyaka MP Jackson Rwakafuzi, an unknown legislator who is listed by the Parliament website as a lawyer by profession.
Only Hon Monica Amoding publicly declined to support the motion at the Parliament’s Conference Hall A on grounds that the agenda of the meeting was not clear. The other 145 NRM MPs resolved to amend the constitution to have their party chairman go on.
Mr. Museveni last year entered his last constitutional term because he will be older than the presidential age limit of 75 years when the next presidential elections come around in 2021.
Though President Museveni has in the past distanced himself from any intentions to remove the presidential age limits, The MPs agreed to table the motion to Parliament on Thursday.
Four time presidential candidate Kizza Besigye has already warned that any move to amend the constitution will be met with resistance from the people.
