The 317 age limit law amendment heroes’ (Members of Parliament) over the weekend hlda thanksgiving bash in Kiboga District were the ruling National Resistance Movement party also launched a campaign to extend the presidential term from five to seven years.

Codenamed the ‘Align and Arrive 777’ campaigned will take the party to constituencies to explain the need to extend the presidential term to 7 years.

“What is remaining is doing everything possible to align the organs of government with the 7 year term as it was passed for the Members of Parliament. We shall do it through a referendum, we shall start talking about a referendum which was passed by cabinet and the EC should organise for the elections soon,” NRM Chief Whip Ruth Nankabirwa, also the Kiboga District Woman MP said on February 25..

“Those who are intimidating you, we shall deal with them,” President Museveni has assured the MPs at the fete.

In December, Michael Tumusiime (NRM, Mbarara Municipality) moved the motion to have term of Parliament, President, all other elective positions increased to 7 years, with effect from current Parliament.

At the same event, the ruling party leaders also launched a campaign dubbed “Align and Arrive” that will see them traverse the country to explain to the electorates why they should take part in a referendum to extend the presidential term of office from five to seven years.
Mr Museveni said the MPs now form the new breed of ‘party historicals’.

Critical lawyers have argued that while amendment of article 77 of the constitution is legally acceptable, its construction to extend the current term is unconstitutional and a violation of article 1 of the constitution. The people of Uganda exercised their mandate and voted in leaders for 5 years. Extending the current term to 7 years actually suspends the right of Ugandans to elect their leaders City Lawyer Kamukama David said.
