At 35 years old, an age where most players have already retired, Tony Mawejje hasn’t stopped. Since 2004 when he first earned his national team cap, Mawejje has played 68 international matches, scoring 8 goals butbeing dumping by former Cranes coach Micho Sredojevic early this year meant he had to work harder to be considered by interim coach Moses Basena.
The Club FK Tirana man was called up by the national team on Thursday for upcoming World Cup qualifiers after an eight-month absence.
Mawejje has been recalled at a time Khalid Aucho is suspended.
The former Masaka local council player has played for various clubs like KCCA FC, Police FC, URA FC before going abroad where he featured for IBV Vestmanjar (Iceland), Golden Arrows (South Africa), Haugesand (Norway), Valur (Iceland), Throttur (Iceland).
He is expected to start when the Black Stars visit Uganda on October 7 before a trip to Brazzaville in November with Cranes hoping to upstage group E leaders Egypt for the lone slot to Russia.
Egypt have nine points, Uganda seven and Ghana five.
