Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda has commissioned the newly installed cancer treatment machine at the Uganda Cancer Institute at Mulago.

The Cobalt 60 Tele-therapy unit was bought in May last year, 14 months after the old one broke down.

The machine arrived in the country in August last year, and installation kicked off in September.

The machine was procured from the Czech Republic’s multi technology company, UJP Praha that majorly deals in medical, nuclear and industrial machineries.

Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng was quick to dismiss claims that the Machine was not up to the task.

The whole unit was purchased at  664,830 Euro.

Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng however noted the need to speed up the expansion of  radio-therapy services in the country, citing the increasing number of cancer cases.

Also present at the event was the Director General of International Atomic Energy Agency, Ambassador Yukiya Amano, who arrived in the country on Tuesday.

The International Atomic Energy Agency is reported to have footed half the cost of the machine.
