The Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court has on Monday issued criminal summons against the former Forum for Democratic Change presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye.
Kizza Besigye failed to appear in court today as earlier ordered.
Presecutor Racheal Nabwire informed the presiding Grade One Magistrate Noah Sajjabi that Besigye had not shown up for the mention of his treason case. She then asked Court to issue criminal summons against Besigye since she had not received any explanation from the FDC politician.
The summon requires Besigye to appear in court on the 27th of March 2017 for further mention of his case as Police continue investigations in his case.
In his last appearance in January, Besigye told the magistrate that he would not return to Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court where he was charged with treason unless he was arrested again and dragged there.
“I respectfully want to inform this court that I will not come back to this court. When investigations are done they can inform me. I will only come back to this court as a prisoner if they choose to arrest me but i will not come back myself,” he said.
Besigye was arrested in May last year on the eve of president Yoweri Museveni’s swearing in and airlifted to Moroto District where he was charged and remanded to prison. However, he was later transferred to Kampala and charged at Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court before being released on bail by the High Court.
