Uganda’s Muzamiru Kakande has won a gold medal in the 2017 Africa Boxing Championship that ended in Congo Brazzaville on Saturday night.
Kakande won by a unanimous decision in the welter weight category (69kg) against the 2016 Rio Olympiad Merven Clair from Mauritius.
Two other Ugandan boxers won silver medals after losing in the finals. David Ayiti in the Super heavyweight category (91kg+) lost by a Technical knockout (TKO) to Cameroon’s Arsene Fokou Fosso, while Geofrey Kakeeto in the bantam weight (56kg) lost by a unanimous decision to another boxer from Mauritius. Kakeeto stopped Tunisia’s Bilal Mhamdi in the semi finals on Friday.
All the 16 boxers who reached the semi finals qualified for 2017 AIBA World Championship slated for August 25 to September 3 in Hamburg, Germany.
Fred Kavuma, the publicity secretary of the Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) said on phone that this was a good performance by the team. “We struggled to get finances and sent nine boxers for the event. Coming out with three medals is very good because they have also qualified for the World Championship,” added Kavuma.
At the 2015 Africa Boxing Championship Uganda sent eight boxers and had four suffer defeat at the semi final stage, but qualified for the World Championships in Doha, Qatar.
