Former Forum for Democratic Change-FDC presidential candidate Rtd Col Dr Kizza Besigye has challenged the recruitment of the Local Defence Unit-LDU personnel in Kampala and Wakiso District.

Dr Besigye together with City Lord Mayor Elias Lukwago say the  recruitment was an illegal move aimed at curbing political opponents in Kampala rather than fighting urban crime.

Their criticism of the LDC recruitment comes after the Uganda People’s Defence Force-UPDF announced having recruited a total of 3,610, part of the 24,000 that has been ordered for training and arming by the President in the three districts that form Kampala Metropolitan Policing area.

Addressing journalists on Thursday Besigye said that the intention and recruitment of LDUs has nothing to do with managing crime, but managing politics.

Dr Besigye claims that this move is part of government’s plan to eliminate political opponents arguing that such security measures by the President were “laughable”.
