President Museveni has set up a visitation committee to look into the incessant strikes at Makerere University after the latest lecturers’ sit-down strike provoked an Executive order closing it down indefinitely. The committee is to commence work immediately.

The President according to his senior press secretary Don Wanyama has set the terms of reference for the nine-man committee headed by Dr. Abel Rwendeire, a former minister and current deputy chairperson of the National Planning Authority.

“In the exercise of the powers vested in the President by Section 26 of the Universities and other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 as amended, President Museveni has appointed a Visitation Committee of Inquiry into the affairs of the university,” the State House statement released on Monday said.

Lady Justice Keturah Katunguka is the deputy chairperson while the members include former minister Tim Lwanga, Dr. Florence Muranga, Dr. Proscovia Namubiru Sentamu, John F. S. Muwanga, Dr. Paul Musasizi, Dr. Kisoro and Eng. Lumu.

This follows the announcement made by Education minister Janet Museveni last week after she had held an inconclusive crisis meeting with ministry officials at State House Entebbe.
