‘Museveni promised us air’, Kisoro voters protest

Thousands of residents in Bufumbira North Constituency in Kisoro District are up in arms over an unfulfilled pledge made by President Yoweri Museveni during the last presidential campaigns.

This was revealed at the belated International Labor day celebrations.

Area residents say that President Yoweri Museveni pledged to facilitate the process to create Bukimbiri Constituency, as a new electoral area curved out of present day Bufumbira North. The president’s pledge was made during a public rally at Rubuguri Playground on December 30, 2015.

However, no step has been taken towards the creation of the new constituency. The matter, which dominated the Friday activities, was first raised by the Kashija Cell local council chairperson, Emanuel Kasigwa who accused President Museveni for ‘promising them air’.

Kasigwa was backed by John Tumuheirwe, the Kirundo Sub County Chairperson saying that the community is hungry for its own constituency and representatives to end marginalization under the current set up.

Fideris Kanyamunyu, a businessman and resident of Rubuguri parish is optimistic that the new constituency will usher in better service delivery and development.  Kanyamunyu questions why the matter, which constituents hold so dear, has remained pending for more than two years.

John Nizeyimana Kamara, the Member of Parliament for Bufumbira north says he will support the splitting of the constituency, if it is the will of the people.

But State Minister for Local Government Jennifer Namuyangu called for patience saying the creation of a new constituency requires planning and resources.
