The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party Members of Parliament are meeting President Museveni this afternoon over the proposed constitutional amendment on government acquisition of land.
The MPs are scheduled to meet President Museveni at 2pm.
Solomon Silwany, the vice chairperson of the NRM parliamentary confirms that the scheduled meeting will discuss and conclude the proposed amendment because Members of Parliament have disagreed on a number of issues.
He noted that the meeting is expected to find a way forward on the matter.
Government recently tabled before parliament the Constitutional Amendment bill 2017 seeking to amend Article 26 of the Constitution to allow for compulsory acquisition of land by the government before settling compensation disputes.
However, the proposed amendment continues to attract opposition from sections of the public including cultural leaders, religious leaders, and politicians among others.
The consideration of the proposed amendment has also failed to progress with the Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafire asking parliament’s Legal Committee for more time to consult cabinet.
