Museveni gov’t becoming increasingly hostile towards journalists: Isaac Imaka
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The President of the Uganda Parliamentary Press Association Isaac Imaka notes that the state will become increasingly hostile towards journalists as it seeks to quash dissent.

He observes that state actors and law enforcement agencies act with impunity and arrogance that indicate that they are certain of never being brought to book.

Imaka was commenting on the recent arrest and detention of journalists outside the constitutional provisions for arrest and custody, of recent two journalists have been held incommunicado in ungazetted detention centers. They are Charles Etukuri and Isaac Bakka.

Etukuri of the new vision was only released following an intense social media campaign that put pressure on the security operatives holding him.

Bakka was held incommunicado for three months and only just last week materialized in Luzira maximum security prison.

Imaka says this proves the kind of impunity practiced by state actors, he calls upon the media fraternity to join hands in calling for an end to such actions.

Kin Kariisa the Chairperson of the National Association of Broadcasters says they are engaging government on the matter.

He advises journalists to also take precautionary measures while pursuing stories.

Imaka says there is need for journalists across the country to receive refresher courses on their rights and roles in the country.
