Embattled Makerere academic and government critic Stella Nyanzi, who was arrested and jailed for insulting the President Yoweri Museveni and first lady, is set to appear in court on Tuesday.
According to court documents, Dr Nyanzi who has been on remand at Luzira prison since April 13th 2017 will today be produced before Buganda Road Court for mention of her case.
She is facing criminal charges for allegedly referring to President Museveni as a “pair of buttocks” in a Facebook post.
The academic, who trained as a medical anthropologist, often uses sexual imagery to underscore her points on Facebook, leading many to accuse her of obscenity in this conservative country.
But her fans say she is an honest activist who is using her literary skills to fight for the poor.
On April 10, Magistrate Ereemye remanded Dr Nyanzi to Luzira women’s prison until today when he said he would hear her bail application and also receive a report of her mental status as requested by the state at her maiden appearance.
Last week, Dr Nyanzi fought off doctors who had gone to her prison cells to examine her mental status as required by the state.
Meanwhile, the High Court had not yet fixed a date to hear Dr Nyanzi’s application for revision. The deputy registrar of the High court, Eleanor Khainza, recalled the file after Nyanzi’s lawyer Isaac Kimaze Ssemakadde wrote asking her to revise the case.
TheUgandan on Monday reported about how Mawanda was accused of siding with the state after he refused to hear Nyanzi’s bail application on April 10, after prosecutor Jonathan Muwaganya asked court to first ascertain Nyanzi’s sanity.
